Last week I had the opportunity to start my 40-hour internship at the Vermillion Middle School. I was very nervous to begin, but after two weeks in the classroom it has me super excited to teach in the future. I am in a 6th grade classroom. It has really surprised me how different the 6th grade classroom is compared to when I was in 6th grade. As much as it is different, the concepts are still the same.
The biggest difference I have noticed is how much of the math they are doing on the internet. They still use whiteboards and the interactive board, but most of their assignments and bell ringers are done on the computer. They had a paper and pencil test, and the reactions they had were priceless. They said things like “yayy” and “we really get to do this on paper.” I did most of my work on paper and pencil and was very interested by the websites they used to do their assignments. The one that I have not heard of was a website by the name of IXL. This inspired me to look more into this website to see if it was something I would potentially want to use in my future classrooms.
According to Home School Math, “IXL is a math and language arts practice for K-12, and it has unlimited questions on thousands of math topics and a comprehensive reporting system.” I also found out the IXL means “I excel,” which I thought was very clever. The students in my class really seem to like this website, and it has very good examples for the topics they are learning. A lot of teachers I have talked to say that they struggle finding good worksheets that relate to just the topic they are talking about. This website allows teachers to have access to unlimited topics and examples on what ever they may be discussing in their classroom. I also love how bright and inviting the website looks. It uses a wide variety of colors and looks as if it encourages students to be happy while doing math. It is not just some boring math website that is strictly black and white. It is definitely a website I will look into using as a future teacher.
Something else I really love about the classroom I am doing my internship in is their use of whiteboards. Every student has a white board on their desk so they are able to follow along and do practice problems. I really like this because the students are being exposed to doing math in many different forms. They are not strictly doing work on the white boards or strictly doing assignments on the computer. I am excited to complete the rest of my internship and continue to look for new practices I can use in my future classroom. I am also very excited to learn for the students in my class and get their insights on what I can do to have a successful classroom in the future.
